Homeowners insurance direct mail increases 19% in 2008, reports Mintel Comperemedia

Business Wire, Feb 20, 2009

CHICAGO — Insurance companies seem to have found a bright spot amid last year’s dismal housing market. While overall direct mail volume plummeted from most financial services companies during 2008, mail from homeowners insurance providers rose. Mintel Comperemedia, a service that provides direct marketing competitive intelligence, reports a 19% increase in homeowners insurance direct mail sent to acquire new customers.

Mintel Comperemedia tracked 82 million homeowners insurance offers during 2008, up from 69 million in 2007. Estimated mail volume for new customer acquisition rose steadily through the year to a peak in August when insurers sent over 10 million marketing direct mail offers promoting homeowners insurance to consumers.

“Homeowners insurers tapped an interesting direct marketing strategy for 2008,” comments Daniel Hayes, VP of Insurance Services for Mintel Comperemedia. “With the housing market struggling and fewer people moving to new homes, insurance companies realized they couldn’t count solely on new homeowners for profit. Rather, they had to either convince current clients to increase their coverage or steal customers from the competition by advertising lower premiums.”

Daniel Hayes points to 2008 direct mailings tracked by Mintel Comperemedia that show insurers trying to increase business via the current homeowner market

Trine Gallegos: Charter Academy gets jump on holiday fundraiser

0 Comments | Oakland Tribune, Aug 5, 2009 | by Trine Gallegos

HAPPY HOLIDAYS? No, the heat hasn’t gotten to me (yet). It’s the Antioch Charter Academy getting a big jump start on its major fundraiser. Chairwoman Tamara Mays said the school is trying “to get the community involved early in our efforts to reach out to needy families during the holiday season.”

The school runs several tree-related fundraisers: a tree lot in December, trees for the troops and trees for needy families. Tamara said last year was such a “rewarding experience that this year we’re even more motivated.”

Here’s how you can help: Purchase a tree for the troops or a needy family, or sponsor a tree with a donation of lights and ornaments. Trees for the troops are shipped overseas with a personal note. The decoration option allows buyers to contribute gift cards, lights and ornaments, while the gift of a tree is given directly to an area family.

If interested, contact Tamara at kypa_mays@yahoo.com or 925.727.7348.

THE NEED TO READ: While the majority of students enjoyed a school- free summer, three Dozier-Libbey Medical High School students were busy winning awards this June.

Antonio Hernandez, Jose Parra and Tuyen Mai won a certificate and pin for placing in the Top 10 in the National Health Occupations Students of America’s category of medical reading in Nashville. The Antioch students were the only freshmen who placed this high out of all 60 events.

Medical reading is a competitive event. Students read four books about medical topics, take a written test and answer questions from a panel of judges about the books. Dozier-Libbey students came in eighth in this event.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN: Our far East County friends have started school, and already have some fun events planned. For instance, on Aug. 21, Brentwood’s Adams Middle School holds a fundraiser for its music department at Antioch’s Barnes & Noble. From 10 p.m. until midnight Aug. 25, the school hosts a rock ‘n’ bowl event at Harvest Bowl. For more information, phone 925-513-6450.

Over in Bryon, Excelsior Middle School hosts its back-to-school night from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12, and 3-4:30 p.m. Aug. 28, it’s holding a social. For more information, call 925-809-7530.

LAST-CHANCE FOR CAMP: Antioch schools start on Aug. 24. In the meantime, students can enjoy a week of camp. The Salvation Army of Antioch holds its last session of the summer Aug. 10-14 for $60. The week includes an outing, a party, cooking, movies, science, games and learning activities. The fee also includes breakfast, lunch and snacks. The camp is at the Salvation Community Center, 525 E. 18th St

attorney, Christine Flowers; Redeem the Vote national president, Bill
Devlin; Townhall Magazine contributor, Scott Wheeler; talk show host,

The event will feature a “We the People” Soap Box Hour during which Tea
Party attendees will be introduced and given the opportunity to address
the crowd and voice their concerns.
